Stay Foolish, Take The Road Less Traveled
The Road less travelled.
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma- which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”- Steve Jobs
When I first read these words, I felt guided and inspired. It led to a moment of personal reflection, committing, once more, to have the courage to follow my heart, take that road less traveled even when others around you are in doubt. I am reminded of those moments when most people just don’t get it! Those moments where the world looks at you, listens to you as you passionately go on and on and on about your dream and many just shake their heads and wonder…. Really madam/ sir, that’s a good area of interest but really, what’s all the fuss? Oooh, keep the fuss! I will tell you why…shortly.
The truth is that when you have a dream there will be that initial phase where what you do is mostly tell others about the dream. In the business world this could be referred to us marketing, in the field of social science this could be considered as lobbying and getting stakeholder buy in, in the Christian circles this is considered sharing for purposes of support and prayer! Among friends and colleagues this is considered brainstorming or creating opportunity for feedback or positive criticism.
But guess what, only after this phase has passed is one best able to launch into the Action Phase. For some the ‘sharing’ phase may take a few minutes, days, months while for others it may take years. Regardless of how long it takes, this is a phase where many dreams are natured and many dreams too are shattered.
As Steve Jobs put it, “ Your time is limited……………Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice…….have the courage to follow your heart…”. Conversely, I have found that often, handling the external voices, though challenging, is easier than handling that inner voice of doubt. That fear of setting off into the unbeaten path, the road less travelled.
I have made peace with the fact that your dream is just that, YOUR DREAM. You understand it best, you are the one who is most passionate about it, you are the one best placed to share the dream with millions of other people and you should operate from the forefront to actualize it. That is why it is YOUR dream! Your parents and guardians love you, your friends love you too, your boss and professional colleagues hear what you are saying but guess what, YOU are and SHOULD be, the one who gets it best and get is most! It is your dream, remember?
When the voice within speaks doubt, fear, difficulty, it is a greater challenge to overcome. The noise of other’s opinions can then drown your dream. Strive to stay focused on the bigger picture, see possibilities in everything. Let the fire burning within your heart be kept ablaze by that great impact your dream will have on planet earth. If you dreamed it, you are the right person to nature that dream. You are more than able; the dream giver equips beyond our human limited imagination! Take courage in that. Take responsibility for every dream and go forth into the road less traveled, it yields abundance less experienced. My journey is incomplete but I am surely on a road less traveled. Striving to stay focused on the bigger picture. I can’t wait to tell you all about it…some day, soon!
